I had to turn someone away - Not Every Jiu Jitsu Gym Is the Same
I recently got a phone call from someone interested in training at Forged.
As we talked, he explained that he was going through what he called a "midlife crisis." He wanted to learn how to fight. He wanted to beat people up, get beat up, and get some aggression out.
By the end of the conversation, I realized something.
I wasn't the right fit for him.
That probably sounds strange coming from a gym owner. Most business owners would tell you that every customer is a good customer. But I've realized over the past year that I'm not trying to build a gym for everyone.
I'm trying to build the right gym for the right people.
One of the questions I get asked most often is, "What makes Forged different from the other jiu jitsu gyms around Springfield?"
The truth is, there are a lot of good schools in the area, and every one of them has its own personality. Some are built around producing high-level competitors. Others focus heavily on no-gi training or mixed martial arts. There is absolutely a place for that, and I have a great deal of respect for anyone dedicating themselves to teaching jiu jitsu.
It just isn't the vision God gave me for Forged.
From the beginning, my wife and I have said that Forged is a community disguised as a jiu jitsu gym.
We teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because I believe it's one of the best tools in the world for building stronger people. The techniques matter, but they're only part of the story.
We're a traditional Gracie academy. Right now we train exclusively in the gi, we focus heavily on self-defense, and we're a grappling-only school. Everything we teach is built around helping ordinary people become more capable, more disciplined, and more confident—not just on the mats, but in everyday life.
One of my favorite things to watch is transformation.
I've watched kids walk through the door unable to do a front roll. A few months later they're moving with confidence, solving problems on their own, and encouraging the newer students behind them.
I've watched adults come in looking for a workout and leave becoming better leaders. They communicate differently. They carry themselves differently. They become more patient with their families and more confident at work.
Those changes matter far more to me than medals.
One comment I hear over and over from adults is, "I just want to come in, get a good workout, sweat, learn something real, and still be able to go to work tomorrow."
I smile every time I hear that because that's exactly who we built Forged for.
Most of our members are fathers, mothers, business owners, teachers, first responders, and hardworking people who have responsibilities waiting for them when class ends. They want to train hard, but they don't want to feel like every class is a fight for survival. They want to learn real self-defense without worrying that they're going to get injured and miss work or time with their family.
Parents tell me something similar.
They aren't looking for constant tournament pressure. They want their children to become respectful, disciplined, resilient, and confident. They want them to know how to defend themselves if they ever need to, but they also want them to become better young men and women.
Competition has its place, and I genuinely respect the people who love it.
But competition isn't the mission at Forged.
People are.
If you're looking for a place where ego takes a back seat to growth, where community matters more than comparison, and where self-defense is valued as highly as sport, I think you'll feel at home here.
Because at the end of the day, our goal isn't simply to teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Our goal is to help forge better husbands.
Better wives.
Better fathers.
Better mothers.
Better leaders.
Better people.
The jiu jitsu just happens to be the tool we use to get there.
If you're looking for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Springfield, Nixa, or Ozark, Missouri, and you're more interested in learning practical self-defense, building discipline, and joining a community than chasing medals, we'd love to meet you. Come train with us and experience what makes Forged different.
